Feed 4 for £10: Spaghetti Bolognese

"I can never make a pasta sauce taste as good as shop bought!"

Okay, so yes even I am guilty of occasionally giving in and buying a premade jar of sauce. However, this is one of the cheapest, easiest meals you can make. In fact, I'm pretty sure this was the first basic meal I learnt to make back before I came to university.

Spaghetti Bolonese is a staple, and the start of this meal is the start for several other meals that I'm happy to discuss here over the next few weeks! But for now, shall we take a look at how cheap this meal is to make?

  • 2 tablespoons oil (£0.03)
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed (£0.06)
  • 1 onion, diced (£.0.16)
  • 1 teaspoon tomato purée (£0.01)
  • 500g beef mince (£1.69)
  • 1 yellow/orange pepper, chopped (£0.16)
  • 1 glass red wine (£1.35)
  • 400g chopped tomatoes (£0.31)
  • 250g mushrooms, sliced (£0.65)
  • 1 beef OXO cube (£0.09)
  • 1 teaspoon mixed hebs (£0.05)
  • 280g pasta (£0.12)

This would bring your meal to a grand total of £4.65 - roughly £1.16 per person! Again, I am looking at own brand items, and as always; these prices are correct at time of writing. I prefer using beef mince, however you can use any kind of mince you would prefer! Similarly, these are the recipes as I make them - you may wish to cook larger or smaller portions according to who you are feeding.

Now, the method part actually took me a while to remember... when you get used to making it, you don't tend to remember it step by step!

  1. Heat your oil in a saucepan.
  2. Fry your garlic, onion and tomato purée until the onion is softened.
  3. Add your mince and cook until browned, before adding in the pepper and softening.
  4. Pour in your glass of red wine and lower the heat to a medium heat. Allow this to bubble until the liquid is reduced by half.
  5. Add in the chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, mixed herbs, and crumble the OXO cube over everything. Stir to combine, and leave to simmer for half an hour.
  6. Cook your pasta according to the instructions on the packet.
  7. Serve hot!

And there you have it, a delicious spaghetti bolognese for less than £5, never mind £10! As always, let us know if you choose to make this or if you do anything differently to me!
